A Commitment to Career Development and Professional Growth

At the School of Medicine, we believe career development is not a single event but a continuous journey. From the first day of medical school through residency placement, students are supported by a comprehensive Academic and Career Development Roadmap designed to help them explore opportunities, develop meaningful mentor relationships, and prepare for successful careers in medicine.

For M1 and M2 students, the cornerstone of the program is the Career Development Series, which introduces students to the wide variety of specialties available within medicine. Throughout the academic year, departments host specialty-focused lunch sessions where faculty physicians, residents, and other specialty representatives share insights about their fields, discuss career pathways, and answer questions. These sessions allow students to explore potential career interests early in their medical education and begin forming connections with physicians across the institution.

Students are further encouraged to explore specialty interests through elective opportunities, clinical experiences, mentorship programs, and research initiatives that provide meaningful exposure well before residency decisions must be made. Early engagement allows students to make informed choices about specialty selection and identify opportunities that align with their professional goals.

The program also includes school-wide events such as the Residency Fair, where students can interact directly with residency programs and learn more about training opportunities across specialties. As students progress into their M3 and M4 years, the Road to Match series provides comprehensive preparation for every aspect of the residency application process, including specialty selection, personal statements, ERAS applications, interviewing, rank list development, and Match readiness.

A key strength of the program is personalized career advising. Students have access to guidance from program directors, department chairs, faculty mentors, specialty leaders, and School of Medicine deans who provide firsthand knowledge of their fields. Whether discussing specialty competitiveness, research opportunities, elective planning, or residency preparation, students benefit from individualized support throughout their medical school journey.

By combining early specialty exploration, meaningful mentorship, personalized advising, and structured residency preparation, the School of Medicine equips future physicians with the knowledge, resources, and support needed to successfully navigate their path from medical student to practicing physician.
